Becoming a Member
Becoming a Member
Any first-year student with a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of a full curricular period is eligible for membership, provided that student has taken normal academic coursework. Once inducted, membership is conferred for life, and members are not required to maintain a 3.5 GPA.
Eligible students will receive an invitation to join the society at the beginning of the Spring semester of their first year at UNM. A one-time membership fee of $90.00 entitles you to a lifetime membership in both the national organization and the local chapter at UNM.
We understand that paying the membership fee to join an organization like Phi Eta Sigma may be difficult for many students. To help those who wish to join our organization with financial need, we are pleased to announce our New Member Lobo Scholarship. Two inductees who demonstrate financial need and a commitment to Phi Eta Sigma will be granted this scholarship to cover the membership fee. If interested, please contact our advisor Greg Golden at ggolden1@unm.edu
Benefits of Membership
Membership in Phi Eta Sigma allows you official national recognition and encourages active involvement within the UNM and Albuquerque community, as well as active participation in the national organization. Phi Eta Sigma gives you the opportunity to develop leadership skills, participate in community service activities, eligibility for scholarships open only to Phi Eta Sigma members, and to network with both students and UNM faculty and staff.
National Scholarships
Inducted members are eligible for scholarships offered through the national Phi Eta Sigma organization. For more information regarding these national scholarships, please visit their website by clicking HERE.
Chapter Scholarships
Each year, the UNM Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma recognizes three outstanding members with scholarships. Students may earn points throughout the year by attending chapter meetings, events, service projects, or other approved programs. At the end of each year, these points are totaled and the students with the top 3 highest point values are awarded the Black and Gold Scholarship (1st place), the Cherry and Silver Scholarship (2nd place), and the Turquoise Scholarship (3rd place). Scholarship amounts vary by year depending on available chapter funds.
